Hi, I’m Alice Fisher.

Growing up, I was told that the ‘insecure lifestyle’ of an artist wouldn’t suit me, that London was a ‘lonely place’, and that my dream was ‘rogue’ considering my academic capabilities.

I was so dissuaded and disconnected from my dream that I gave it up.

Whilst training as a musical theatre performer, I was trying to think of ANY other job in theatre that might suit me more than this forbidden lifestyle, rather than figuring out how to make it work for me.

Then Covid hit, and Rishi Sunak inspired my next move: I got into teaching!

Having already been a (highly skilled) dance teacher before my degree, this seemed like a natural safe bet on paper… and my Mum was a nurse! Why wouldn’t a secure, public service job suit me?

But within 3 years, I became another statistic, as an Early Careers Teacher who’d burnt out and left the profession.

So what would I do differently?

I like to think that, with the benefit of hindsight, my dream could have been achievable, if I’d have done the following things:

  • Personalised my dream: how could it work for me?

  • Used my other skills to supplement my patchier creative income

  • Created a portfolio freelance career

The issue is, you can’t be what you don’t see: I knew no one that was truly making creative careers work outside of the linear, typical route.

Then, in my early twenties I met my partner - a comedian, who doggedly and strategically hunted down his dream until it bent into submission. And I felt cheated.

If I’d have known that THIS was what a successful career in the arts could have looked like, then I’d have done it!
